James Stewart McGehee papers, 1826-1912 (bulk 1903-1904).

Correspondence includes letters (1826, 1878-1887) of family members and associates concerning chiefly financial matters. Other items from this period include promissory notes from Negroes (1878) and a statement of cotton sales from a New Orleans factor (1887). Letters (1903-1904) mainly discuss the burning of Bowling Green Plantation and the destruction of other property belonging to Edward McGehee. Included are impressions of the Negro troops, of J. B. Cook, and of Edward McGehee. Reminiscences of an eyewitness of the event, Caroline McGehee Stewart (b. 1838), are included among the letters. A map shows the route taken by Cook to Bowling Green Plantation; newspaper clippings provide biographical information about Cook, an account of the burning, and a reply to Cook by George Thomas McGehee (b. 1833) as published in the Mississippi newspaper VICKSBURG HERALD (1904). Writings in the collection include James Stewart McGehee's autobiography; the history of a slave family associated with the McGehees; and a typewritten copy of an article by C. R. Calvert which was published in the ILLINOIS CENTRAL MAGAZINE, entitled "The West Feliciana Railroad; the first railroad in Mississippi."
